This month’s presentations:

  • Monitoring Treatment Response for Kaposi Sarcoma: What? So What? Now What? - Thomas Odeny, MD, MPH, PhD, Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis

  • Presentation TBD - Mintesnot Teni, PhD, Assistant Professor at Saint Louis University

Speaker Bios:

  • Thomas Odeny is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine. He holds an MBChB from the University of Nairobi and an MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Washington. His postgraduate training includes Internal Medicine residency and a Clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology at the US NIH/National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Dr. Odeny’s work is centered on cancer clinical trials, global oncology, and implementation science in the global response to cancer.

Equity is at the heart of Dr. Odeny’s research. He is a 2023 recipient of the Robert A. Winn Excellence in Clinical Trials: Career Development Award, where he is examining ways to increase diversity in cancer clinical trials, including expansion of treatment options for cancer in people living with HIV in the US and globally. He is also studying the association between genetic subtypes of the Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and clinical severity of the different cancers and lymphoproliferative diseases caused by KSHV in western Kenya. He is also principal investigator (PI) on a multisite clinical trial between Washington University, PensieVision, the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Makerere University, and the Uganda Cancer Institute that seeks to test the feasibility of a novel, AI-enabled, 3D camera to improve care and treatment for Kaposi sarcoma patients.

Dr. Odeny seeks to pay it forward for future trainees in Global Oncology. He currently serves as Associate Director for the HIV, Infectious Disease and Global Health Implementation Research Institute (HIGH-IRI) program at Washington University and co-leads the NCI-funded Africa Regional Implementation Science Education Center for Global Oncology (ARISE-GO) to provide early career cancer researchers from East Africa with hands on leadership skills and research support.

  • Dr. Mintesnot Teni is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Saint Louis University College for Public Health and Social Justice. His research interests include preterm birth and sexual and reproductive health among underserved populations.
