This viewpoint article, co-authored by Midwest D-CFAR director, Elvin Geng, MD, discusses the ongoing challenge in managing HIV care. In 2024, a large percentage of people with HIV knew their status and were often successfully treated, but many (up to half) still drop out of care at some point. This can lead to worse health for those individuals and increased spread of HIV. The authors call for better research and strategies to keep people engaged in treatment and to re-engage those who have dropped out. It suggests that developing a global research plan and improving methods to study re-engagement will help in offering better and more comprehensive care for people living with HIV.
