The Midwest D-CFAR at 314 Day
March 17, 2026
On Friday, March 13, members of the Midwest D-CFAR had the opportunity to engage the local community at 314 Oasis, a “collective effort in community care created in the aftermath of the [May 2025] tornado which tore through the heart of St. Louis”. Community partners Williams and Associates, KKA Consulting, and Simpson Consulting, LLC provided HIV testing and incentives to individuals who were impacted by the tornado and who may currently be unhoused. Throughout the event, community members shared laughter and conversations about 314 Day traditions and their favorite St. Louis foods. Naturally, fried fish and mostaccioli, Imo’s, and Chinese takeout were mentioned most often. Many of the individuals who connected with the team had not yet finalized their own 314 Day plans. However, one woman shared that she planned to collect funds to support the unhoused community in celebrating the holiday. At the time of the conversation, she had already raised $400 and planned to distribute White Castle, Red Hot Riplets, and Vess sodas on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier that day, Kneeshe Parkinson, Scientific Working Group Coordinator, made her first stop at The WOKE Brand to pick up 314 Day sweatshirt apparel. During the visit, she engaged in a brief but meaningful conversation with a woman who was preparing a variety of St. Louis–favorite foods, including shrimp fried rice, egg rolls, and other dishes, with plans to bring community members together on the North City side near the Goodfellow area. The conversation reflected a shared commitment to celebrating culture and creating spaces for connection. Throughout 314 Day, Parkinson also took time to observe and engage with community members, exchanging short conversations and encouraging a tone of peace and positivity for the weekend.
The 314 Day celebration was filled with spirit and exuberance across the community. Community leaders, including Kneeshe Parkinson and Darius Rucker, M.Ed, Chair of the Midwest D-CFAR Stakeholder and Community Advisory Committee gathered at the City Market. There, they experienced Kris Blackmon’s To STL With Love: Celebrating Hip Hop in St. Louis exhibit, captured fashionable photos, and enjoyed incredible music together. The gathering created a meaningful moment to strengthen relationships and show care for one another, particularly during a time when many have faced ongoing challenges. The day also included time spent at Sophie’s Artist Lounge, where a vibrant collection of local vendors showcased their work and creativity. One memorable interaction included meeting a young woman who shared her passion for creating and supporting waist beads, offering another example of the many culture-driven expressions present throughout the celebration.
Rather than focusing solely on work and risking burnout, the moment served as a reminder of the importance of relaxation, laughter, and authentic connection. Seeing community members come together to support one another, celebrate culture, and create meaningful experiences reflected the true spirit of community. In many ways, it demonstrated what it means to celebrate 314 Day the right way.
